Abstract

This report has primarily attempted to make a holistic picture of Web-Based Instruction (WBI) and assessment in higher education. Since WBI has exploded in the past few years, relatively few studies have been devoted to an empirical examination of the effectiveness of WBI and its assessments. I review current studies on WBI and assessment to explore the issues on those topics. Then I reviewed ten case studies, which developed online courses using course management system, delivered online and evaluated students, focusing on three aspects: (1)process of web-based course development, (2) type of assessment, and (3) other findings of studies on pedagogy and evaluation. Next, I discussed the implications of the results for teaching and learning. Finally, I presented four obstacles to WBI and assessment in conclusion.
