Abstract

The purpose of this report is to inform its readers about the theories and applications of computer support for collaborative learning. The first section reviews the history and theoretical bases of collaborative learning, identifies its characteristics, and explains how knowledge is constructed in the learning environment. The second section introduces the model of computer-supported collaborative learning (DSCL) and gives some examples and applications which employ the CSCL model. The third section reviews research on educational use of CSCL, including the effects on student intentional learning, student interaction, students? academic progress, and teachers? changing instructional practices. The last section provides effective strategies for the implementation of CSCL and gives suggestions for further research.
