Abstract

This study was an investigation of the interface design principles-focus and grouping an how they impact users? learning process in terms of completion time, recall ability, and comfort level. Eight participants were assigned to one of two groups. Participants in group 1 used version 1 of a program which had a screen layout using the design principles of focus and grouping. Participants in group 2 used version 2 of the same program which had a screen layout suing poor interface design violating both principles of focus and grouping. From the comparison of the completion time, the quiz score, and the questionnaire results, plus the interview of the members of each group, there was an evidence to show that the use of focus and grouping interface design principles can help the user?s completion time and comfort level but not on the user?s recall ability.
