Abstract

The primary focus of this report is to inform readers about the educational MUDs/MOOs and relevant research findings, as well as the applications of educational MUDs/MOOs in learning English as second language (ESL). The second purpose I to provide recommendations for ESL teachers using MUD/MOO as an instructional tool. Benefits and problems of both educational MUDs/MOOs and EDL MUDs/MOOs were discussed. Examples of current popular educational MUDs/MOOs including Diversity University and schMOOze University, an ESL MOO, were offered. Principles for effective use of a MOO for educational purposes were also enumerated.
