Abstract

This report explores existing literature in the area of interactivity and computer-based learning programs. It presents a review of literature focusing on a developed taxonomy of four interactivity classifications developed by the author: perspectives, styles, environments, and levels. This report also describes the Alien Rescue program, an interactive, multimedia CD-ROM for sixth grade astronomy classrooms in relation to the interactivity taxonomy. A small study was performed with four sixth grade participants in order to determine the usability of Alien Rescue?s interaction devices as well as attitudes toward the program and CBI in general. The results of the study showed that low-level interaction design devices require specific instructions while higher-level interaction elements require guidance only. The findings also indicated positive attitude results. This report concludes with three interaction design principles directed to developers of CBI.
