Abstract

Min Liu Students of instructional systems design (ISD) generally gain a solid foundation in instructional design theory and new-technology production skills. While theoretical foundations and application experiences are necessary and valuable, many of the management processes for successfully producing a project (such as techniques for obtaining funding through proposals, special concerns in the management of human resources, or writing a marketing plan), may not be readily apparent or accessible to students. Instructional Development (ID) is the process by which design theory and production skills combine with project management to produce an instructional project. This report has the following objectives: to review the primary and secondary processes of Instructional Development (ID) and in particular, to describe these processes for the multimedia project; and to evaluate the results of interviews with five experiences ID project managers who provide insight on their successful techniques of producing interactive multimedia. The goal of this report is to provide useful guidelines on ID processes to newly-minted instructional designers who expect to manage their own design company or to manage a design project or series of projects for a company or organization.
