Abstract

Online-based learning as a replacement for traditional education methods has been a controversial topic since the development of the Internet. The success of inquiry-based learning tools, such as WebQuests, adds substantial weight to the argument for online education. A WebQuest typically possesses six critical attributes (i.e., introduction, task, information sources, process, guidance, and conclusion) and three non-critical attributes (i.e., group activities, motivational elements, and a single discipline or interdisciplinary approach). Through the effective implementation of these attributes, the full potential of a WebQuest is realized. The focus of this report is on examining the aspects of WebQuests, both broadly and specifically. Two sample WebQuests are evaluated. A new WebQuest, The Principles of War, which was designed around the above attributes, is presented. The implications for using the WebQuest in military training are discussed.
