Abstract

A knowledge-driven economy and globally competitive society require learning and instruction which is flexible and effective. Currently, e-learning is an alternative format of learning and instruction. Unfortunately, many e-learning courses are just another version of a textbook delivered electronically. Without proper design, an e-learning course may be a big disappointment to e-learners. The educational potential of computer game software and video games as well as simulations is widely recognized by many researchers and educators. Hence, incorporating motivational and educational elements of computer game software and video games as well as simulations into an e-learning course will help to motivate e-learners and facilitate learning. This paper aims to investigate e-learning, games, and simulations in order to form design principles of a game-based e-course and a simulation-based e-course. Proposed design principles are offered in this report.
