Abstract

Many articles, books and research papers have been written on the motivation of children in school. However, little research has focused on the motivation of adult learners, particularly, professional adult learners. This paper reviews the existing literature concerning the motivation of adult learners, how this motivation differs from that of children and how best to include effective motivational strategies within instructional design targeted at motivating adult learners. The research shows that instructional designers should incorporate relevant tasks based on the needs of the target audience, and real-world situations allowing students to incorporate and apply their existing experiences and knowledge to construct meaningful applications of the information.
